Registering for the Feed-in Tariff
In order to claim ‘Feed-in Tariff’ payments for the energy that the system generates and any excess that is exported, the owner must register the system with a Utility company. In some cases (such as Housing Associations) the system owner who is eligible for the ‘Feed-in Tariff’ may not be the same person that is living in the property. Only the system owner can claim the tariff, although tenants will normally benefit from the ‘free’ electricity during the day – depending on the arrangements between the tenant and the Land Lord / Housing Association.
A system owner does not have to apply to the same Utility Company that supplies their electricity to claim the ‘Feed-in Tariff’ payments.
Each Utility Company has it’s own ‘Feed-in tariff’ application form, which owners are required to complete, which normally requires the following information:
- Payment types (generation and/or export payments)
- Owners contact details
- Generator location (if different to above)
- Type of generation equipment (solar PV, wind, other)
- New building / existing building
- Building type (domestic, commercial, industrial, etc)
- System size (in Kilowatts or Megawatts)
- Date of installation / commissioning
- MCS details (You must include a copy of your MCS certificate, which should be supplied to you by your installer, to qualify) or ROO-FIT details for installation larger than 50kW.
- Generation meter details (none, or model, serial number and meter reading)
- Export meter details (none, or model, serial number and meter reading)
- Import meter details
- FIT payment details (Who and where should the payments be made to)
- Signature and Date

If your system was installed prior to 15 July 2009 (when government published the FiT consultation) you must be registered under the Renewables Obligation (RO) to receive the lower rate FiT.
