Research shows 91% of UK households would consider installing solar power

But want to be paid more for the electricity they generate before they buy with a European style ‘Feed-in Tariff’.

Tuesday 24th February 2009, London: According to a new survey to be published by the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) (1) 91% of the UK population have considered or would consider buying solar photovoltaics (PV) to generate electricity at home (2). However, the survey also found that a purchase would most likely be made with the introduction of a good European style Feed-in tariff (FIT), where the clean energy payment price exceeds that of grid electricity purchase price. These findings come at a crucial time in renewable energy policy making as the government has committed to introduce a FIT for the UK in 2010, but the price for solar electricity is still to be determined

New UK Solar Campaign Launched: 'We Support Solar'

The UK Solar PV Manufacturers Association is today launching a new campaign to promote the use of solar power in the UK. The campaign "We Support Solar" (www.wesupportsolar.net) has already attracted the support of MPs on all sides of the House of Commons, and is endorsed by campaign groups Friends of the Earth, the World Future Council, Greenpeace and the Green Alliance, as well as the European Photovoltaic Industry Association and Renewable Energy Association. The launch of "We Support Solar" comes at a critically important time for the development of solar power in the UK with Feed-in tariffs for solar PV and other renewable electricity technologies due to be launched in a little over a year's time. MPs endorsing the campaign include former Labour Ministers, Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg MP and Shadow Conservative Ministers Greg Barker MP and Bill Wiggin MP. Government boosts funding for solar PV following high demand

Solarcentury has welcomed the news that the Department for Energy is boosting funding for solar PV under the Low Carbon Buildings Programme by £7 million. This decision follows the release of the Government's zero carbon homes consultation last week, which confirmed that a combination of solar PV and energy efficiency measures is the cheapest way to build low carbon homes at the lower levels of the Code for Sustainable Homes.
